04/09/2024 - Close to £5bn was spent by Europe’s top five men’s clubs – but which players may prove to be worth the fees paid? For many Liverpool fans the summer window was too quiet, with no major arrivals and contracts left unsigned. Arne Slot’s impressive start has eased frustrations, and the Valencia keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has agreed to join next summer – but when a new face arrived at Anfield, he was undeniably a bargain. Chiesa was frozen out at Juventus and has had issues with form and fitness, but he has the skillset to succeed in the Premier League and is still only 26. Birmingham City paid £5m more to sign Jay Stansfield from Fulham on deadline day. Chiesa need offer only glimpses of his best to repay his cut-price fee. Continue reading... Collapse

18/07/2024 - With the tournament now over, the important business of signings will again command our attentionTransfer window interactive: all the latest movesIf you wanted a good judge of a Spanish defensive midfielder, then Xabi Alonso’s opinion would be sought first. After winning the Bundesliga last year, the head coach wants to ready Bayer Leverkusen for the Champions League. He earmarked García early on as the man he needed in front of the defence to improve a team that went through the league season unbeaten. The 27-year-old missed out on the Spain squad for their victorious European Championship but he has faced worse ordeals. After joining Manchester City from Villarreal as a teenager, he looked set for a fine career trajectory but was released by City having made no impact and ended up joining a failing Dinamo Bucharest, leaving after three months. The rebuilding job started at Eibar before he headed to Girona, culminating in Champions League qualification last season. Continue Collapse

Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyökeres, Victor Osimhen and Ivan Toney may be on the move, with a number of heavy hitters in England and abroad on the lookout for goalscorers. Perhaps the most interesting striker on the market, though, is one who struggled for regular game time for his side earlier this season.Benjamin Sesko was unlucky to arrive at RB Leipzig in the same summer as Loïs Openda. Leipzig signed Sesko from Red Bull Salzburg last August, a month after they had spent €45m to bring Openda from Lens. Openda was superb in his first campaign in Germany, scoring 24 goals and providing seven assists in the Bundesliga. The Belgian took no time to adjust to the rigours of German football. 26/05/2024 - Die Werkself lost the Europa League final but ended season with two trophies and belief things will only get betterIt wasn’t supposed to happen like this. They had shown they could fall with the finishing line in sight – and how – to Zinedine Zidane’s famous, thunderous left-footer at Hampden Park, or to a rampant Bayern Munich in the mid-Covid DFB Pokal final in Berlin. For a more modern twist you could even throw in last year’s Europa League semi-final under Xabi Alonso’s command, in which José Mourinho and Roma miraculously survived a barrage in the BayArena (23 Leverkusen shots to Roma’s one). Not this season, though. The greatest testament to Bayer Leverkusen’s extraordinary season is that losing Wednesday’s Europa League final in Dublin (and comprehensively at that) to Atalanta felt like the shock, rather than Die Werkself getting there in the first place to fluff their lines. Fifty-one games unbeaten up until that point doesn’t quite do it justice. Alonso’s side have been a Collapse

02/09/2024 - Leverkusen had gone 462 days without a domestic defeat and led 2-0 here before a dynamic-shifting fightbackOnce again Bayer Leverkusen put up formidable numbers at the weekend. They outgunned their visitors RB Leipzig in almost every possible metric; 26 shots to the visitors’ eight, 18 corners to two and 62% possession. Yet the number that will stick in the mind is a significantly bigger one.Four hundred and sixty-two. That was the number of days since Die Werkself’s previous Bundesliga defeat – before Saturday, when Leipzig finished the job that Borussia Mönchengladbach could not on the season’s opening night. Like Gladbach, Marco Rose’s team came back from 2-0 down at the champions. In contrast, they surfed the momentum, with Loïs Openda adding a firmly struck winner to his equaliser. Xabi Alonso’s side were daring, thrilling fare throughout the campaign, signalling how serious they were to the world in late January by destroying incumbents Bayern Munich 3-0 at BayArena. They won the title at the first opportunity – again in great style, beating Werder Bremen 5-0 – and Alonso’s coaching skill was apparent at every turn, managing his squad through injuries and fatigue and expertly flipping the script in game, besides getting unexpected levels out of players like Jonathan Tah, Lukas Hradecky and Robert Andrich. They didn’t do FC Köln any favours on Saturday night. After the Champions League finalists’ meek 3-0 defeat at Mainz, Edin Terzic and Marco Reus were sheepish and apologetic, with the coach bemoaning the display as “the face we’ve shown far too often this season”.No matter. It takes a lot to dampen the spirits of the people of Cologne at any time, but on this Saturday? Nothing was going to smother the fire in their hearts. Their Effzeh had snatched victory from the jaws of certain defeat in a manner that stunned a stadium and city in which people want to believe anything, everything, is possible. The match-up between Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart – last season’s top two, with the former having won both league and DfB Pokal – was a reminder of an extraordinary 23-24 campaign, as was the bristling intensity of Saturday night’s fixture, uncommon for such a nominal showpiece. And the manner was everything. Even it took a penalty shootout for Leverkusen to lift the fifth major trophy of the club’s 120-year history (and the third in the last four months under Xabi Alonso), the way in which Die Werkself got there suggested that we are probably not looking at a one-hit wonder.
