1 DAY AGO - The series continues in which writers have the task of choosing a boiled-down team from club’s entire historyBy Federico Fercomani for The Gentleman UltraDespite boasting an icon like Dino Zoff not between the sticks but rather on the bench as a coach and then behind the desk as a presidential figure, it’s Roberto Lovati who stands out as the most representative goalkeeper in Lazio’s history (though how about Angelo Peruzzi, Luca Marchegiani or Felice Pulici ?). Among those top candidates, Lovati was captain when Lazio lifted their first ever trophy, the Coppa Italia, in 1958 in the final against 1957 European Cup finalists Fiorentina. After featuring 135 times in goal over six seasons, he then went to on to serve as assistant coach, head coach (105 games, lifting Lazio’s first international trophy, the not-so-well-known Cup of the Alps, in 1971 against Basel), reserve-team coach, goalkeepers’ coach, head of scouting, talent scout and director. 25/11/2024 - Goalkeeper is at heart of team reviving and defying expectations thanks to seven straight Serie A winsDavid de Gea said on day one that he wanted to “make history” with Fiorentina. Three months later, you could make a case he has already succeeded. The Viola won their seventh consecutive Serie A game on Sunday, 2-0 away to Como. Only once before – back in 1960 – have they achieved such a run in the Italian top-flight.The Spaniard has been essential. De Gea collected his fifth clean sheet against Como, more than any other goalkeeper has managed since he made his league debut on 15 September. He is having to work for them, too. Continue reading... 20/11/2024 - A club that punches above its weight, Le Zebrette have calmness, flair and focal point up front in Oliver BierhoffJames Oddy for The Gentleman UltraFor a club that have never won a Serie A title, picking a five a side team made up of former Udinese players proved monumentally difficult. Nestled in north-east Italy, Udine is significantly closer to Slovenia’s capital of Ljubljana than Rome. Yet it has been a nursery for many elite players, as well as providing the stability and seclusion for the more mature player to find their feet and flourish. This side is a mixture of youth and experience and helps to emphasise just how much talent has graced the Stadio Friuli. My selection based primarily on players who played during my lifetime and ones that would flourish in the five a side game. Continue reading... Collapse

11/11/2024 - Inter midfielder never fails from 12 yards. This weekend he did – and now the top of the table is tighter than everWould it be too dramatic to portray a November missed penalty as a sign to let go of everything we thought we knew about the Serie A title race? Well, yes, OK, probably it would. But seeing Hakan Calhanoglu’s spot-kick carom back off a post in the second-half of Inter’s 1-1 draw with Napoli was at the least a shock to the system. He had converted all his previous 19 attempts since joining the Nerazzurri from Milan in 2021. “It had to happen sooner or later,” said the player. Were the rest of us ready, though, to live in a world shorn of such certainties? As the commentator Patrick Kendrick put it: “With Calhanoglu missing, we’re just left with the misery of death and taxes”. Continue reading... Collapse

04/11/2024 - Defeat at his former club could spell the end for coach who has faced an uphill task in following Daniele De RossiHalloween has been and gone, but Roma’s past keeps coming back to haunt them. Terrorised last month by Edoardo Bove, the graduate of their own academy who scored one goal and set up another in a 5-1 defeat by Fiorentina, the Giallorossi travelled on Sunday to face Verona. This was the club where Roma’s manager, Ivan Juric, built his reputation by steering a side that yo-yoed between Italy’s top two tiers throughout the 2010s to consecutive top-half finishes. It’s also a place he feels profoundly connected to. “Whenever I say: ‘I’m going home,’ I mean I’m going to Verona,” said the Croatian. “My soul is linked to this city.” Continue reading... Collapse

30/10/2024 - It is too early to talk of a title tilt by the 2023 champions but their mastery of small details and swagger bodes wellWhen Antonio Conte looks this happy, you know it is time for rivals to start worrying. The Napoli manager grinned broadly as he strode about his old stomping ground at San Siro, acclaiming players, clapping backs and dispensing belligerent bear hugs. “This is one of the best groups I have worked with in my career,” he told the broadcaster Dazn. “I’m breathing clean, beautiful air. I’m breathing the passion and the enthusiasm.”His team had just beaten Milan 2-0, moving seven points clear at the top of Serie A after 10 games. A fleeting moment – the teams immediately behind them are yet to play in this midweek round – but still an astonishing turnabout for a Napoli side who finished 41 points behind the champions, Inter, last season. 28/10/2024 - An all-time classic clash between Inter and Juventus was rounded off by the Turkish teenager’s two-goal cameoIt had been a bonkers, record-setting, night – one of the highest-scoring matches ever in a rivalry that goes back 115 years – but not all the protagonists were enjoying themselves. “Thanks for the show!” said Zvonimir Boban in the Sky Sport studio to Simone Inzaghi at full-time. The Inter manager winced and forced a laugh. “The neutrals like you enjoyed yourselves. Me, a little bit less.”Inzaghi had seen his team fritter away a two-goal lead in the final 20 minutes against Juventus, letting 4-2 become 4-4. To write it that way does a disservice to Kenan Yildiz, the teenager who came off the bench to score twice and turn the game on its head – writing his name into Derby d’Italia lore. Yet to tell it any other way would ignore the truth that Inter could have been out of sight before he did. Continue reading... Collapse

5 DAYS AGO - Fiorentina and Inter players had squabbled over a VAR check before the hosts’ midfielder suffered a cardiac arrestBefore Edoardo Bove fell, it had seemed as though a disallowed goal was the most important thing in the world. Fiorentina and Inter were waiting for a VAR check to confirm whether the ball really had gone out as Denzel Dumfries set up Lautaro Martínez to score in the 17th minute of their top-four clash. Players and coaches voiced their disagreement in the usual theatrical terms. And then, it did not matter at all. Bove had not involved himself in the discussion, waiting in the far half of the pitch. He dropped to a knee for a moment, presumed to be tying a shoelace, but in fact using his hands to steady himself on the turf. After standing back up, he took a handful of steps then collapsed beside Hakan Calhanoglu. Continue reading... Collapse
